Germany Requires Printed Paper Receipts in 2020

Sugar Receipts by French Pastry Chef in Bavaria

Starting in January 2020, all German shops must print paper receipts – even if a customer doesn’t want one. The purported reason is to prevent tax evasion and is required even though all German cash registers have chips that record every transaction for tax authorities.

Small shops that sell pastries are protesting and claim that 49 of 50 receipts are thrown away by shop owners when customers refuse them. One French pastry chef named Ludovik Gerboin in Bavaria began making edible receipts that were placed atop cupcakes. This is sweet a form of protest.
